The idea of moving towards community led house building and understanding how good design and business ideas can contribute to our communities, rather than extract from them, strikes a powerful resonance today. It is time for change and Initiative Homes is keen to offer the considerable experience and talent or our people and contribute to that change.
In 2012, the Schumacher Institute for Sustainable Systems founded a consultancy arm to bring the outputs from its diverse research programme to the marketplace.
The Institute’s research programme Converge (funded by the EU) broke new ground in considering what economic changes would be needed to eliminate the gap between rich and poor without over-exploiting the earth’s resources and further contributing to climate change. This gave the Institute a number of powerful insights into how the global economy worked from the local to global level and highlighted the urgent need to rebalance the economy towards communities and people.
During the creation of the Schumacher Institute consultancy programme, a number of highly qualified and experienced construction and housing industry specialists joined the network of associates. This presented a unique opportunity to combine their talents with the understanding gained through the Converge project.
Initiative Homes was initially set up as a consultancy offering. It quickly became apparent that to make the most of this opportunity, a separate wholly owned entity needed to be set up with the express intention of taking action.
Moving towards a more local community-based approach to house building by working with communities to understand peoples’ needs and aspirations is the key first stage in what we do. With this understanding we can work with the community to show how good design and business ideas can contribute to their wellbeing. Initiative Homes is keen to offer the considerable experience and talent of our people to help your community make its aspirations a reality.
